Ralf Rangnick explains why Cristiano didn’t take the penalty

Manchester United suffered an embarrassing 3-1 loss at the Etihad Stadium ending any hopes of their top 4 finish. Man United started the game horribly conceding in the 3rd minute of the game. Arsenal soon doubled their lead to add extra pressure on the visitors. However, Cristiano Ronaldo scored one goal and gave Man United hope of a comeback before Half Time.

Cristiano’s goal was his 100th goal in the Premier League and he dedicated the goal to his baby boy who had passed away earlier this week.

Man United got a penalty in the second half but much to the surprise of everyone, it was Bruno Fernandes who stepped up to take the penalty instead of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Rangnick talked about Cristiano not taking the penalty in his post match press conference:

“After the match I asked Cristiano about the penalty, he said he didn’t feel he should take it, he said it would be better if Bruno took it.”

“It would have helped us a lot if that had been the equaliser and probably would have changed the whole game. In the end, very unlucky for us.”

“They [the players] are very disappointed and frustrated. Had we converted the penalty it would have changed the whole game, but we didn’t.”

Rangnick also said that his team is unlucky not to get a better result from today’s game:

“We bounced back from a poor start and had numerous chances. We hit the crossbar and the post twice. We had enough chances to get a better result.”

“Today was better than Tuesday, an improved performance. We should have scored more goals than we did.”

“We need to defend better. We have conceded an average of three goals in our last three games, we were far better a few weeks ago.”
