Gareth Bale is about to make his 100th senior appearance for Wales, and his agent, Jonathan Barnett, has spoken about how important his homeland is to the Real Madrid star.
Bale has made it clear how much he appreciates representing his nation, going to great efforts to represent Wales despite the many ailments that have plagued his club career.
However, Barnett remembered a conversation he had with Bale when he was just starting out as his agent, in which the four-time Champions League champion threatened his agency if he suggested Bale play for England instead.
“He told us how amazing Wales was from the first day I met him and his father,” Barnett told numerous English news sites.
“When we met with him, he said that he had the opportunity to play for England. ‘Never say that again if you want to be my agent!’ he replied.
“He’s a zealous Welshman.”
Wales is now in third place in World Cup qualification Group E, tied on points with Czech Republic despite having played one less game, putting them on the verge of achieving a historic accomplishment.
“I believe that getting to the World Cup with Wales will be his ultimate triumph,” Barnett said.
